My preferred subject matter is landscapes and my favored medium is soft pastels. I drag the sticks of vibrant pigment across a rough paper surface and by layering, rubbing and erasing, I create the illusion of a three-dimensional scene.

For my landscapes to fully succeed, there are several conditions that must be met. First, it's necessary to catch and hold the viewer's eye and attention from the distractions that occur around us at all times. Possible means to do this are by using high contrast from light to dark, or varying colors from warm to cool, brilliant to subtle.

The next requirement is to catch the viewer's heart. Typically I use the romance or "magic" of the scene I'm creating to remind the person of some rich landscape memory - say, a spectacular sunset or a favorite locale.
