Sacred Kuka 'emoku

Pastel

While painting pastel landscapes on the island of Maui, I discovered kuka emoku and felt moved to paint this special place. The Hawaiians have used this rock as both an altar and a battlefield, making it a sacred location closely tied to local history. How best to do a painting of something so vertical?  I wasn't sure about having the tattered banana leaves intruding on the scene. But they gave the impression I was surrounded by greenery.
