I did this charming painting during the 2024 Paint Sausalito Invitational. For a week a group of talented artists descended each morning to paint their favorite views of this wonderful Bay Area gem in Marin County, CA. At the end of the week, we framed our works and exhibited them at the Sausalito Art Center. Prizes were awarded by renowned artist Craig Nelson during the opening reception. The final award was Best of Show in boron of Randall Sexton, a beloved plein air artist who died the previous year. I was totally stunned to hear my name read for this painting!
During execution, I was standing along Bridgeway, the street that runs through town and heads towards Mt Tamalpais that towers over everything. I’d hidden myself between a hedge and sculpture to be out of view of the ever-curious tourists that fill this town during the day. As I was winding up, the twinkling lights in trees along the street came on and became the surprise the icing on the cake. It was a fun challenge to include parked cars on both sides of the main thoroughfare.
